December 12 marks International Universal Health Coverage Day.
This day was established by the United Nations in 2012 and is part of the United Nations 2030 Agenda goals.
The aim of this observance is to raise awareness and mobilize international efforts toward achieving health equality.
UHCD 2024
This year’s focus is on the role of financial protection in the progress toward universal health coverage. The goal is to ensure that everyone can access essential diagnostics, care, prevention, and treatment without financial barriers.
THE STATE OF HEALTH COVERAGE WORLDWIDE
What’s the global situation? Despite international efforts, about half of the world’s population still lacks access to essential health services. The main reasons include:
-
Economic and social disparities that exclude the most vulnerable
-
Conflicts and political crises, which weaken health infrastructures
-
Shortage of healthcare workers and limited access to medications
At the international level, the focus is on finding innovative solutions and dedicated funding to achieve universal health coverage.
SUCCESS STORIES
This day is also a time to remember success stories that demonstrate how universal health coverage is possible.
In China, the rural health insurance program is an innovative system that has reduced inequalities and guaranteed accessible services to millions of people.
Rwanda has made significant investments in public health: through international cooperation and internal reforms, the country has significantly improved access to preventive care and primary healthcare.
There are also global immunization programs: thanks to campaigns like GAVI (the Global Vaccine Alliance), millions of children are now protected from preventable diseases through vaccination.
These examples show that, with commitment, collaboration, and innovation, the goal of universal health coverage is achievable.
UHCD: HOW TO TAKE ACTION
There are three simple actions we can take, as global citizens, to help build a fairer world in terms of health access:
-
Support international organizations and campaigns that promote global health
-
Take part in local events and initiatives held for this day
-
Stay informed: raising awareness is the first step toward change
Every action counts. Every voice can make a difference.
