Yesterday, November 14th, was World Diabetes Day.

This year’s theme is “Diabetes and Wellbeing” to highlight the importance of creating the right conditions to live with the disease peacefully.

Indeed, many people living with diabetes have experienced both physical and psychological effects. According to a global survey, around 77% of people with diabetes have suffered from anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions.

The goal of World Diabetes Day 2024 was to emphasize the importance of providing psychological support to those who live with the condition every day.

Diabetes: The Numbers

With increased life expectancy and a growing elderly population, the number of people over 65 affected by diabetes is also on the rise.

In particular, among the elderly, Type 2 diabetes is the most common form.

Type 2 Diabetes: “Adult-Onset Diabetes”

More common than type 1 among those over 65, type 2 diabetes involves a defect in insulin secretion.

This form of diabetes, commonly known as “adult-onset diabetes,” tends to appear with age. There are no specific causes that directly lead to its onset. However, family history seems to play a key role: around 40% of people with type 2 diabetes have first-degree relatives with the same condition.

What Are the Symptoms?

Generally, type 2 diabetes remains asymptomatic for a long time and gradually manifests with the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue

  • Increased thirst

  • Increased urination

  • Weight loss

  • General discomfort

How Can It Be Prevented?

Adopting a healthy lifestyle can definitely help prevent the disease. According to studies, engaging in aerobic activity for at least 20 to 30 minutes a day can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by around 60%. It’s also important to follow a diet rich in unsaturated fatty acids.

Diagnosis of this type of diabetes is usually done through blood tests, with fasting blood glucose levels >126 mg/dl.

As the fourth leading cause of death globally, at Cerotek we believe it’s crucial to start a prevention process before the problem arises.

With Doktorbag, our medical kit designed for the prevention of chronic diseases, you can monitor various vital parameters (including blood glucose) to immediately trigger a targeted intervention in case of abnormal values.
